South Wetlands Park
Philadelphia, PA
South Wetlands Park is a visionary project that reimagines the crumbling historical piers along the Delaware River as a vibrant ecological park designed for both people and wildlife. Rather than relying on traditional park elements like mowed lawns or sports courts, this space embraces the natural rhythms of the river and serves as a living example of urban ecological restoration. With boardwalks weaving through tidal wetlands, visitors are invited to witness ecological processes firsthand, encouraging a deeper connection to nature in the heart of the city.
Evan McNaught has been involved in the project from its earliest stages, contributing to concept design, CAD documentation, 3D modeling, public engagement, and site surveying. His work helped shape a park that challenges conventional ideas of urban green space, offering a model for restorative, educational, and immersive waterfront experiences. The community engagement aspect has been key, helping people understand and appreciate landscapes that may fall outside the typical park vocabulary—spaces rich in habitat, history, and transformation.
South Wetlands Park is not only a public space; it’s a catalyst for a new kind of urban riverfront—one that honors the past while embracing the ecological future of Philadelphia’s waterfront.
